Creating Space at Home for Your Kids to Thrive

Creating Space at Home for Your Kids to Thrive

Back to school is just around the corner! Would you like to create a learning space for your kiddos at home that will encourage them to spend more time in the books with room where they can unwind, rest, dream and be creative? This is all a possibility! Here are some ways that you can create a space at home to promote focus and productivity:

  1. Create a homework space that is or feels separate from their bedroom space - if you have an area in your house that you can set up a designated homework space, use it, and if it is in their room, create a zone that is a homework zone, and the rest of the room is declared a no homework zone.

  2. Work with them to help design the space - ask them the questions about what they would need and want in the space where they do their homework and what would make their bedroom space more comfortable. Of course, sticking to what is within reason, but hear them out and get a feel for what can be done that aligns with what they have expressed they would like.

  3. If you do need to and can purchase items, consider shopping secondhand and sales! It is very likely that your kiddo’s needs and tastes will evolve over the next year or so, be sure to make a budget and know that spending a ton of money isn’t needed to make a great space.

  4. Make it a vibe! Pick a theme or colour palette to work with. Consider the best lighting for your work space. Note that a minimal decor style will also reduce distractions.

  5. Arrange the space in an organized and efficient way so your children can easily access what they need and are able to maintain it. Declutter, get rid of what is in the way and make sure everything has a home. Clearing the visual clutter does wonders for our mental clutter!

  6. Ensure they have a comfortable chair to do their homework at, this will keep your kids off their bed and the sofa where things like TV and naps might happen more easily. This allows them to focus more easily on the homework task at hand.

Taking a bit of time and working together to create a space for your kids to succeed at home could make all the difference for the upcoming school year! You want them to feel comfortable, relaxed, focused and safe in their environment, as this feeling contributes to their success.
